When elite players are evenly matched, the rallies are on average 20 seconds long and they can get up to 2 minutes long. Repetitively fighting back to return the shuttlecock can be quite tiring depending on how long one can keep the rally going. Elite athletes are able to continuously function through their anaerobic and aerobic systems(fast twitch fibre and slow twitch fibre). Examples of athletes with the anaerobic system or fast twitch fibre are long distance runners, swimmer, walking and etc...The aerobic system or slow twitch fibre requires oxygen causing the athlete to trigger lactic acid stage immediately during intense exercise, examples of athletes who must use fast twitch fibre are boxers, sprinters, weight lifting, and etc… Throughout this chapter I will be discussing about which systems are best for a badminton player and how to train these systems.
